AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND. THE RETURN MATCH AGAINST MAIIYLFBONR. LONDON, August 11. The return match of the Australian cricketers against the Marylebone Cricket Club and Ground was begun at Lord’s ground, London, to-day. The AI.C.C. team was composed as follows;—Findlay, Carpenter, Ohinnery, Ranjitsinhji, Lucas, Smith, Thompson, W. Smith. Stevenson, Young and Mead. Carter, Jones and Saunders stood out of the colonial team. Dull weather prevailed, and tho wicket was slightly soft. About a thousand •spectators were present. Tho home team went first to the wickets, Carpenter and Findlay opening play. Tho former played Howell on to his wicket. One wicket for 1. Chinnory followed, and scored rapidly. Findlay was bowled by Howell when the score had reached 32. Thompson filled tho vacancy. Chinnory was caught easily in tho slips by Trumblo off a rising ball. Three for 47. Ranjitsinhji joined Thompson, and tho pair made runs freely. Ranjitsinhji was eventually caught at short-leg by Duff easily. Barring an easy chance to Gregory at mid-off, off Armstrong, the retiring batsman had produced his 00 runs by fino cricket. Four for 123.
After lunch Lucas joined Thompson. Very quiet play followed, Howell and Armstrong bowling. Thompson . was easily caught in the slips off a rising hall from Howell. Five for 147. Ernest Smith filled the vacancy, but had scored only 3 when he gave Hill a catch at square-log. Six for 154. W. Smith succeeded, but Lucas was easily caught by Duff at short-leg. Seven for 162. With the advent of Stevenson the scoring became faster. The latter, after getting a dozen, succumbed to Howell. Eight for 189. Young, tho ninth man, scored 14 before bo was caught by Hill. Mead, tho last man, had not a chance to score, as immediately on his arrival Noble caught Smith oil bis own bowling. Scores;— M.C.C.—First Innings. Carpenter, b Howell ... ... 1

Tmmper and Duff opened play for Australia. The wicket played well, and both put on runs freely. Trumper was first to go, being caught by Smith deep on tho on-side. The second wickot fell at 80, Young dismissing Duff with a good catch at deep mid-on while partnered with Hill. Duff hit freely despite three bowling changes. Stumps were then drawn.

Tho Australians will tour South Africa about October, under the auspices of tho Johannesburg Wanderers’ Club. They will play two matches at Johannesburg against All South xlfricau eleven.
