Surgeon-Major Pearless, of tho Ninth Regiment, arrived in Wellington from Nelson last evening.

Mr J. i'. Palmer, the now Town Clerk of Wellington, is to be entertained by INo Sydney Town Hall officers on the 15th in.st., on tho evo of his departure for Wellington. Tho farewell will take the form of a smoko concert, at which a presentation is to bo made. Mr Samuel Palmer, who was recently appointed secretary of tho ‘Wellington branch of the New Zealand Tanners’ Union, died suddenly in a tramcar yesterday morning from failure of the heart. Mr Palmer was at one time, a member of the firm of Palmer and Aldrich, and was formerly tho representative in New Zealand of James Service and Co.

Mr Tfngh McMastcr, who died the other day in tho Greytown Hospital, through tlio effects of a gunshot wound received upon tho Wairarnpa Hake, was a colonial by birth. Thirty years ago ho was often a winning .sportsman on tho Hutt racecourse. Ho was at one tinlo manager (for his father) of the famous Tupurnpuru estate, now owned by Mr W. C. Bnolmfian. Mr McMastcr was a great patron of sport, and for a number of years lipid tho position of starter and bandicappor to various Wairarapa racing clnbs. Ho was also a prominent member of Caledonian societies, As a judge of cattle and sheep Sir McMastcr was considered one of tho host in New Zealand. He leaves behind him a widow and an adopted child. Mr McMs>bor was about sixty years old. Mr H. A. Kelly, who is leaving tho Wellington branch of the New Zealand Insurance Company to join tho Auckland staff, was yesterday presented by the directors of tho Metropolitan Building Society with a marble clock, in recognition of his services in connection with that institution. Tho chairman of the company, Mr Littlejohn, made tho presentation. To-night' Mr Kelly will ho entertained by members of the Athletic .football Chib.
