SPORTING.

.WELLINGTON AUTUMN MEETING. SECOND DAY. Eor tho concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting, held at tho Hutt Park racecourse on Saturday, tho weather was line, but cold and dull. Tho attendance, although not so largo as on _ tho first day, was very satisfactory. Some capital racing was witnessed, and good finishes resulted in tho Hurdles, m which two horses doad-hoated, in the Autumn Handicap and tho Hack Plying Handicap. Doctor Hill, who was was graetly fancied for tho Hurdles, collapsed after going a mile and a quarter. Halberdier and Ideal, tho two fancied candidates for tho Autumn Handicap, wero both prominent at a mile. the former was then beaten and tho Napier mare was putting in a good run. Terrapin ramo on when Halberdier had lost his position, and appeared to the race in hand when Tortulla put in a sterling run, and won by a head, with Glenaladalo a short half-length away. Plalberdier, who was placed third, finished sixth. Tortulla and Jenkins were heartily applauded on returning to scale. Windwhistlo for a mile and la for a mile and a half mado a good raco with Cruciform in the St. Leger Stakes. Tho St. Leger filly drew away in tho straight, and won anyhow in record time for tho race. Mr Stead nas won tho raco twice in four years. North Star, who raced disappointingly on tho first day, gave the Hon J. D. Ormond a win in the Hack "Welter Handicap. Ho was shut in on the rails for some distance, but came away from the field as soon as ho got an opening. Porirua, who received most support tor tho Pacific Handicap, ran well, and finished just behind the placed horses. Red Gauntlet was in front all the way, and settled his opponents without d|mculby. A close finish in the Hack 1' lying Handicap was tho cause of a hostile demonstration mado against tho judges decision. Aldinga ran well, but tired in the straight, and was caught by -En Garde, who appeared to win by half a head. Tho judge placed En Garde second, and tho people inside and outside started to hoot, and kept on doing so after tho horses returned to the weighing enclosure. Tho preventiori of such a scone as this should give tho club subject for consideration. Ostiak was one of tho last to leave the mark in tho Suburban Handicap, but was up amongst tho field at tne bend. Pure Silver showed a lot of pace for about four furlongs. Shrapnel Shell hung on to Okoari after Pure Silver was shaken off. In tho run homo it looked as if Mr Watson’s maro would repeat her last season’s victory, but in tho last fifty yards West Guard dashed up between the leading pair, and scorcd in a stylo which reminded those who witnessed it of the old-time finishes of tho veteran horseman, whoso hand has apparently nob yet lost its cunning. Bowman, who disappointed Mr Major in the Thompson Handicap, ran up to his form in tho Hutfc Handicap, and scored for the Hawera sportsman- The Bowshot gelding was well handled by C. Jenkins, whoso successes at the Hutt are well received. Bookmakers were present in large numbers, both inside and outside the enclosures, and appeared to do a good business. The totalisator receipts for the day wore very satisfactory, amounting to £10,984, making a - total or £20,487 for the meeting.
