WANGANUI.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) Tuesday. At the Court this morning, a Maori hailing from Kai-iwi was called upon to provide sureties to keep the peace towards certain informants. There had been disputes between the parties relative to a stream running through a property in which they -were interested, and the defendant had on occasions threatened to use arguments stronger than words in support of his views. The quarrel was not serious. Mr Kettle sought to settle it in a friendly spirit, and urged the parties to shake hands and be friends. This all willingly agreed to do, and for a few minutes the scene in Court was novel and amusing, the disputants shaking hands all round and compelling the Bench and counsel to join in. ‘A young man named John Connell pleaded guilty to horse-stealing, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence. Bishop and Mrs Wallis went up the river by the Waione last trip. They will stay at Pipiriki House for a week. At the annual meeting of the Wanganui Hockey Association last evening the following officers were elected for the ensuing season:—President, Mr W. J. Treadwell; vice-presidents. Revs T. B. Maclean . and H. R. Dewsbury, Messrs A. J. Molly, W. Empson and J. J. Gildey. The annual report showed a very satisfactory year. Representative matches were played, one at Palmerston and one at Hawera. Wanganui won the former by three goals to nil, and lost the latter by the same score. The Easttown Railway Hockey Club won- the challenge shield with an unbeaten record.
