Messrs Archibald, McMillan and Sons, Ltd., Dumbarton, have launched a large steel four-masted ship, about 3400 tons gross register, and 5200 tons deadweight. The vessel, which was named the Urania, is fitted with two deep water ballast tanks, steam winches and donkey boiler, Jarvis patent brace winches, and every recent improvement. She been built to tho order of Messrs B. Wenoke and Sohne, Hamburg. Yesterday morning tho Upolu brought to Wellington from Taranaki 915 boxes of butter for transhipment to Australia. The repairs to tho barque Jessie Osborno are beiug pushed on rapidly, and next week the vessel will again commence to load wool for London. To-day the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Paparoa is to leave Lyttelton for Waitara. She will arrive at this port on Sunday. , The Government steamer Tutanekai is to leave Onehunga to-day for New Plymouth and Wellington. The steamer Hails left New York on the oth inst. for New Zealand via Fremantle. The Hafls will he followed by tho steamer Beira, which is advertised to leave New York on the 15th May. Mr E. Looney, jun., late of Luke and Co.'s ‘foundry, has passed examinations as a third-class marine engineer and as a first-class stationary engine-driver. SHIP WASDALE. FROM ADELAIDE. Yesterday morning the ship Wasdale, from Adelaide, was towed into harbour. Captain Hamond reports leaving Adelaide on the 29th March, and experiencing strong south-west winds to Gape Borda thence northerly winds till off Tasmania. Prior to sighting Cape Farewell last Sunday strong southerly winds prevailed. Cargo for Wellington consists of 73 tons salt and 50 tons flour. Tho vessel has also on board 850 tons concentrates for London from Adelaide. The vessel will load wool at this port for London under charter to Mr G. H. The ball will drop at noon precisely, at which hour a chronometer sot to Greenwich Mean Time should show 12h 80m. Any difference will be the error of the chronometer, fast or slow on Greenwich Mean Time. , True time will also be given to-day by hourly galvanometer signals to the Museum and the Public Telegraph Office.
