Sne sails again for Napier, Gisborne. Auckland and Sydney at 7 p.m. Mr Pelham, late third officer of rno Wttkatipn. has been transferred to (no Talune. .... . , . The Taviuni, which has arrived at Auckland, brings the following cargo for Wellington;—s324 bunches of bananas, 3012 cases other fruit. The Mana is to sail for Patea this afternoon. She will not call at Waitara, as was intended. It is understood that Mr Hursthouse, ■late purser of the Wainui, is to become chief clerk of the Union Company s Greymouth office. Mr Horton is at present purser of the Wainui. Mr S. Inuis, who has of late been doing clerical duties in the Tasmanian service, will probably join the Wainui as purser. , . , , The barque Don has been chartered to load at Liverpool for Wellington and steamer Mokau, a vessel of 98 tons, which was recently built at Sydney, is expected to leave Newcastle any day for New Plymouth. The Mokau on arrival in these waters, will enter the coal trade between the Mokau river and ports on the West Coast, on behalf of the Taranaki Collieries, Limited. Another steamer for the same trade is being built at Sydney. TALUNE. FROM SYDNEY. The Union Company’s intercolonial steamer Talune arrived from Sydney at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Dr Pollen, the newly-appointed Health Officer, boarded the vessel, and examined all the passengers and crew. The vessel herself was also fumigated. Dr Pollen examined about 149 passengers in a little over an hour. The mails were sent to Somes Island, fumigated, and then brought into town. The passengers were brought ashore by the tug Duco. The Talune left Sydney at 1 p.m. last Saturday, and experienced light variable winds and smooth seas throughout the passage. At 5 a.m. last Sunday the officers sighted a barqn ~ steering north-west, and at 7 a.m. eu Monday a small steamer was passed bound in a westerly direction. Cargo for this port comprises 100 shafts, 694 felloes, 40 pairs naves, 163 pieces timber, 13 casks of spirits of wine, 86 bars lead, 50 bags spokes, 25 bales kapok, 350 cases soap, 113 rolls wire, 86 cases fruit, 35 cases drugs, and a quantity of sundries.. The Talune will be berthed at the Queen’s Wharf early this morning, and sails for Southern ports, Hobart and Melbourne in the afternoon. THE NEW WHITE STAB LINER ATHENIC. The steamer Athenio, due next month from London, is the first of three large twin-screw steamers which are being built by Harland and Wolff for the Lon-don-Now Zealand service of the Shaw, Savill Company. Her dimensions are 520 feet by 63 feet, by 49 feet, with a gross registered tonnage of 12,234. She has exceptionally comfortable accommodation for about 100 first, 100 second, and nearly 200 thiid-clasa passengers. The firstclass dining saloon is in the fore end of a large deckhouse on the upper deck. Tho library, which is immediately above the saloon, is a spacious apartment, about 10 feet high, fitted with comfortable lounges and chairs, and a large bookcase.. The first saloon smoke room is, on the same deck as the library, but further aft. In the seoohd-olass accommodation, the dining saloon is a handsome apartment; there is also a comfortable library and a smoke room. The third-class accommodation is spacious and comfortably fitted the rooms having two, four and six, berths each. Upon the completion of tho steamer now building on the Clyde for the Union Steam Ship Company, the new vessel will, it is rumoured, replace the Aorangi on the run to Vancouver, and it is likely that the Union Company will pick another fast steamer from among the sixty odd vessels it controls to take the place of the Miowera. The Moana is speedy enough to hold her own with the new vessels, and with the commission of tho latter, the sailing time between British Columbia and Sydney, as at present constituted, will bo substantially reduced, so that, in conjunction with the Cana-dian-Pacific Railway’s fast transcontinental service, mails will be transported from Australia to England and vice versa at a speed which cannot be equalled by any other route.
