The Countess Riaz, incidents of whoso vbit to Rotorua liayo been recorded, is the widow of an Egyptian of high position, and is herself a native of that ancient country. Mr Edward Patton, until about six months ago Collector of Customs at Christchurch, died in that city on Saturday afternoon, aged sixty-six. On tho previous afternoon ho was seized with an apopletic fit, and never regained consciousness. He ■was an old offic'or of tho Customs, having previously boon Collector at Hokitika and Napier, and also connected with the local government of Westland in the early days, and was chairman of tho Education Board when tho Premier was a member of it.
