The Opawa, which arrived at this port last evening was delayed for several hours at the Wairoa bar owing to an accident to her machinery. The Waihora arrived at this port from Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon in command of Captain Farmer: Mr O'Callaghan, purser and Mr Clark, chief steward, late of the Tarawera. have been transferred to the Waihora. Captain Dewart, of the Union Company's steamer Kia Ora, who has been at Auckland on holiday leave for the past fortnight, is awaiting instructions at the northern port from Dunedin, before going to Fiji. The steamer Agapanthus, which was towed into Adelaide at the beginning of last week in a disabled condition, was due at Timaru on March 10, to load oats for South Africa. Captain Cooper, of the Kathleen Hilda, leaves Auckland for Kaipara to-day, to take command of the barque Woosung, sailing for Melbourne, timber-laden shortly. Captain Eoy, of the Handa Isle, who is well-known at Wellington, will take charge of the Kathleen Hilda. The Mokoia, which left for Sydney on Saturday afternoon, took away from the colony a larger cargo than has been taken of late. The vessel had amongst her cargo from this port, 9 bales hemp, 5 casks meat extract, 3-t5 boxes butter, and 27 sacks hides. There was also on hoard 174 sacks and 1 bale of fungus from New Plymouth. The Whakatane, from London, now at Auckland, is to make Wellington her next port of call, and afterwards proceed? to Lyttelton, which is her final loading port in the colony. The vessel is to sail for London on the 26th March. The Kahn is expected to arrive at Wellington from the East Coast to-day and will then sail for Oamaru, where she will load produce for Napier. Messrs W. M. Bannatyne and Co. have received information from Capetown concerning the shipping trade there. Under date ISth January, they are advised that at Capetown there were 15 steamers and 22 sailing vessels discharging in dock, one steamer and 7 sailing vessels discharging by lighter, and 8 steamers and 63 sailing vessels awaiting berths. The nrice of best Welsh coal was 65s per ton. Information from Durban, under date 7th January, states that there wore 17 steam-

ers in the anchorage, of which eight were for Government and seven were merchant steamers. All were awaiting berths inside the harbour to discharge their cargoes. Some of the above steamers had already been at Durban a month, and despatch in the future is likely to be very bad. Coal is not plentiful, owing to scarcity of railway trucks at the mines. On the trip of the mail steamer Aorangi to Vancouver on December 17, she reported sighting wreckage from a ship that had either.foundered or lost her dcchload and spars in a storm. Tv;o days before reaching Honolulu the steamer’s officer saw a ship’s boat, and a little later a couple of spars adrilt. The boat was floating bottom up, and was covered with barnacles. It is possible that tho wreckage seen by tho Aorangi was from, the overdue British coal ship Anglia, from Newcastle, bound to Panama. The Anglia was placed on the overdue list several weeks ago. , , . „ . Mr G. McDonald, late cmef officer of tho Tarawera is now on his way to London by tho Delphic to join the Union Company’s new Calcutta steamer as chief officer. WAKANUI, PROM LONDON.
