Bannatyno . and Co. are advised by circular from headquarters of the following movements of the Tyser steamers: The Star of Australia, which arrived at

The Reiga'e is clue at Melbourne on the 25th February from Now York. She afterwards proceeds to Sydney and New Zealand ports. JACKSON'S HEAD PASSAGES. The following notice to mariners is gazetted;—As several vessels have met with accidents when using the inner passage between Cape Jackson and Jackson’s Head beacon, masters of vessels arc cautioned against tho use of this passage. The recent stranding of the s.s. Kotuku on AValker Rock points to the necessity for great care in working the passage between this rock and the beacon, and to indicate that vessels of the collier class, when uncertain of the state of the tifi*■ or when the tide is against them, should not use it. It has been stated that the tides are very erratic, and that the calculated time of set cannot bo depended upon to within two hours. Tho. master of the Kotuku stated at tho inquiry into tho stranding of that vessel that the flood stream was running' against him six or seven knots, when by calculation tho tide should have been slack. Other shipmasters stated that the tide in the passage sometimes runs fully eight knots an hour, and always sets on to .Walker Rock, and that there have been many narrow escapes in it owing to ships taking a strong sheer when tho tide has struck them. THE NEAV AVHITE STAR STEAMER ATHENIC. Messrs A\‘. and G. Turnbull and Co., local shipping agents, have received a copy of tho plans of the. White Star liner Athenic, recently launched for the London-New Zealand trade. Tho Athenic Is ,12,380 tons and has twin screws. Captain Kempson, formerly of tho lonic, will be in command of the new steamer. The staterooms are principally on the upper deck, the. saloon and eight fine state rooms being on the awning deck, while the libraries and smoking rooms are on tho deck above. The fares to bo charged for the respective staterooms are shown on the plan, and have been fixed'specially low, with a view to attract passengers. Tho staterooms for the second-class passengers are also on the upper deck, well amidships, and abaft of the first-class accommodation. These staterooms are not so luxuriously furnished as those in the first-class, and there will, of course, be the usual difference in the victualling of the two classes. The inside rooms in the first and secondclasses are all exceedingly well lighted and ventilated. There is accommodation for 194 third-class passengers in the after ’tween docks. Passengers aro offered substantial advantage in tho rate when they book for the inside staterooms of the first and secondclass and subject to room permitting only two passengers aro to be berthed in them. As tho first and second-class staterooms connect, should there at any time be a preponderance of passengers in either class, staterooms in one class can be utilised for passengers in the other. The aftermost first saloon staterooms can thus be made available for second-class passengers or the most forward of the secondclass staterooms made available for firstclass passengers. RUAPEHU, FROM LONDON. ARRIVAL AT HOBART. PRESS ASSOCIATION. HOBART, Thursday. At 11 o’clock this morning the New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Ruapehu arrived here from London via Capetown.
