The vessel comes via Auckland and is due a'u Wellington this day week. It is customary for masters of Home traders on entering port to put a sign board at the head of the gangway stating "No admittance except on business." Exception has been taken to this by Captain Nicholson, of the ship Machrihanish, who has hoisted a board notifying that all visitors "aro cordially welcomed.” Captain Nicholson, who is on his first visit to this colony, is greatly taken up witli the climate and cordiality of the people, and on his return to Scotland, his native home, will carry many happy recollections of his visit to New Zealand. The Wellington Harbour Board has given notice that on and after to-morrow night two rod lights will bo exhibited from tho southern end of the Glasgow Wharf. These lights will be placed vertically over each other at heights of 30ft and 35ft above high-water level. This week’s "Gazette’’ states that a telcgraph-cablo has been laid from the east side of Motuihi Island to a point on Waiheko Island about half-way between Pack Point and Haiteatea Bay. Masters of vessels and others navigating in the vicinity are cautioned not to foul or damage tho cable with their anchors or otherwise. An additional regulation for the examination of masters and mates appears in this week’s "Gazette." It states that whenever the holder of a certificate of competency fails to pass any of the three sight-tests, there is reason to believe that ho is from incompetoncy unfit to discharge his duties, and in the public interest the Minister having charge of the Marine Department may cause an investigation to be instituted before a Court having jurisdiction to cancel or suspend such certificate- but, in tho alternative, the Minister may accept the voluntary surrender of the certificate until such time as the applicant succeeds in passing the test in which ho failed. , . , The barque Akaroa, which left Liverpool on August 23rd, arrived off the Heads last evening and was towed into harbour by the Duoo.
