AFRICAN RAILWAYS.
A cable message on Saturday stated that Great Britain has signed a contract for the construction of a railway in the British Cen, tral African Protectorate from Chiromo to Blantyre. the capital, which will open up communication between the sea and the .interior. The necessity for this railway has been frequently impressed upon the Government by Mr Commissoncr Sharpe, administering the Protectorate, and in his last report, for the year ending March 31, 1900. Mr Sharpe again raised the matter. He pointed out that the Protectorate if, .suffering from the want of a railway, which delays its development, and that unless the line is built the Pro* tectorate would soon reach its limit of production and export. It appears that the Government, through the Crown agents, has entered into an agreement with the Shire Highlands Railway (Nyassaland) Limited, to construct a, railway from Chi, romo to Blantyre, which will enable the planters of the Protectorate to get their provisions, stores and machinery brought up in other ways than on the heads of native carriers, and to deliver their pro. ducts to the proper outlets in reasonable time. The company is always to remain British in character.
