MEETINGS.
There was a very large attendance at the Wcsltoyan Literary and Debating Society's meeting last night, when Sir .Robert Stout delivered the last of a aeries of "Century Lectures” on "Some Things Ac_ complished in the Nineteenth. Century." The lecturer spoke briefly on the political, social and industrial progress made during the century, and drew a vivid contrast between the hoirrors of child labour at the beginning of the century and the conditions now prevailing. He also pointed out theimprovements which had been made in forms of amusement, methods of educa. tion, scientific discoveries, philanthropic etc., and ahbwed how these refining influences have had the effect of materially decreasing crime and making the man of to-day a far superior beinc, both morally and intellectually, to his forefather of one hundred years ago. .At the conclusion of his address. Sir Robert Stout met with .a'hearty vote of thanks. Next Thursday the annual meeting of the society will be held.
