GENERAL BULLER.
COMMENTS ON HIS DISMISSAL. (Received October 21, 10.20 p.m.) LONDON, Oc’obcr 24. General Bullor was unmoved when informed of his retirement from the command of the First Army Corps. Regret and surprise have been expressed at Aldershot, and ranch sympathy in tho country. The newspapers publish tributes tp General Buller’s career iu kindly, generous terms. Several organs criticise the Government for weakly appointing General Buller to Aldershot (despite the rule that commanders in time of peace should bo able to command in war) and then seizing on his indiscretion to correct tho mistake. The “Globe” asks, “Who was responsible for the appointment ?” Tho “Yorkshire Post” (Unionist) and tho Manchester “Guardian” ( pre-Boer) agree that tho attack on Sir Redvers Buller’s appointment was virtually an attack on the Government and that he was superseded because he chose to defend the Government’s choice in his own outspoken way. * Prc-Bocr. organs declare that the Government, in order to placate its critics, yielded to their clamour. The Nationalists sympathise with General Buller. The “Daily Indopenuerit” classes him as “tho ablest General sent to South Africa.” Inclignatinnsi-s felt in Devonshire. The Mayor of . Exeter has called a public meeting to express confidence in the General. FEELING IN AMERICA (Received October 25, 0.45 a.m.) LONDON, October 24. Tbe American comments on General Buller aro lenient. The question of discipline docs not appeal to the Americans, free utterance in the United States involving only a reprimand. The* dismissal is’ attributed in America to tho weight of public opinion after the General’s recent speech..
