MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 21. (Before Mr W. B. Hasolden, S.M.) Frank King and John Ramsay, pri. soners undergoing terms of imprisonment, were charged with attempting to escape from lawful custody at Wellington Prison. Mr Garvey, gaoler, stated, that when arrested by some Permanent Artillerymen, the men of. foi od no resistance, and quietly accompanied the Artillerymen till handed over to a constable. King, who had previously attempted to escape, was sentenced to an additional nine months’ imprisonment, and Ramsay had si* months added to his present sentence. Frederick Arnold, an old acquaintancc of the police, was charged with being found drunk. Arnold pleaded guilty of having a “drop of beer,” bub denied being drunk. “Five shillings or twenty-four hours,” remarked Mr Haselden. Mary Ross, an old offender boasting of several aliases, was sentenced to throe months’ imprisonment for being found in an intoxicated condition. Another habitual drunkard, William Roberts, was fined 20s, or in default seven days’ imprisonment, his Worship considering it a mitigation of his offence that he had endeavoured to keep sobo B for a certain period. A fine of 10s was imposed on Norman Christopher for drunkenness. For committing an act of indecency in a public place, Allan Jackson, a seafaring man, was sentenced to seven days’ hard labour. George William Jackson was fined 10s, or an alternative of forty-eight hours, for drunkenness. Bernard Farena, an articled, seaman on the Machrihanish, a German and a person coming within the provisions ot the Immigration Restriction Act, . was charged with absenting himself from the ship without leave. He was-knowa to be away for a few hours, and it was feared, that if the man was not immediately arrested he would have time to get clear, and so make the captain of the ship liable for the bond of JEIOO he had entered into for the man, in accordance with the Act. Farena wag ordered to pay 7s costs, and to.forfeit two days’ pay. George Peter and Antoni Peter, two Assyrians and brothers, were charged with committing a breach of the peace. They had been arguing with tlieir fists, and the police had some difficulty in separating them. They were fined 20s, and ordered to enter into sureties of the peace, to the amount of £2O, for six months; in default of payment ot the fine seven days’ hard labour, Charles Boys, charged with the theft of a silverywatch and chain from a follow was fined £3, 15s of which was ordered to go to the pawnbroker and 6s to go to a witness as expenses. In default, Boys was ordered to go to gaol for three months. Robert ■ Sutherland—a Hawke’s Bay shepherd, with a salary of, £1 per week —was ordered to pay 7s 6d a week towards the support of his wife, the. first weekly payment to be made forthwith. He had disobeyed a previous order ot the -Court, and was in arrears for a, considerable sum. In the event of hi* failing, to attend to the present order, he is to be sent to gaol for six months. Daniel Woods,, charged with attempted suicide, promised tojgo to his friends in Hawke’s Bay if given Ms liberty. He was ordered to come up for sentence when called upbn. The charge of cruelty to a cow, brought against . Robert Collier, ‘ was adjourned to next Briday. . 1 At the Mount. Cook Police Station; yesterday morning, Mr W. E. Sansbury,. J.P.. meted out the customary punishment to two first offending drunkards. Ellen Anderson, for a similar offence, was fined 40s, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment, and Jessie McCormick 20s, in' default seven day*.
