NOTES BY “ADVANCE.” Tho Moora Trial winner, Felicitous, iias several important engagements at Flemingtou next month. For a nonperformer Mr Dakin did not take any liberties with her, and a 51b penalty for Saturday’s win increases her weight in tho Cup to Bst. Felicitous was bred by the lato Air Donald Wallace, and is a half-sister to tho Carbine horse LceMctford. Her dam, Folicitas, is by Calma, from the Auckland-bred Fancy Flee, by Afuskct —Fancy. Felicitous is trained by her owner. On the only occasions that sho previously sported silk—at Fiemington in July and August last —sho finished unplaced. James Sc obio’s luck appears right out at pro sent. He started two horses in tho race. The Strutter and Altitude.. Tho latter, a full brother to Headland and Piomoatory, managed to run second. Fusilottc, who filled tho other place, clirinis the Alusket horse Firelock as ho*, sire. Tho Hurdle Race winner, Tatter Wallop, is trained at Randwick by Air T. Lamond, and is owned by his breeder. Tatter Wallop is a half-brc-incr’to Old Clo’; who recently returned to New South Wales after racing in England. The Clan Stuart gelding is said to bo under orders for the Old Country. Tho Caulfield Cup winner, Hymettus, is owned by Air James Paterson, who ewued tho unlucky Devon. The Musk Rose horse, after winning the Tcorak Handicap, ran second in noth Caulfield end Alelbourne Cups. Devon was trained by Air P. T. Heywood. who owns George Frederick. He trained Calma for tho lato Air Donald Wallace when ho won the Caulfield Cup in 1883, and prepared Hymettus on both occasions that he secured tlae race. Hymettus won races at two, three and four years, did not start as a five-yoar-ola, and only sported silk five times last season. 'During the present season ho scored once at Flejuington and twice previously at Caulfield, and galloped better with every race. Excepting on the second occasion that Paris n on, tho weight. Hymettus carried on Saturday was tho heaviest borne by any winner. The previous best time record was 2miu 36sec. by G’Narqo in 1891 and Hymettus in 1898. Hymottus -was bred by the late Mr W. R. Wilson at St. Albans in 1894 by imported Eiridspord, a shipmate of Castor’s, from Busy Bee, by tho Alarquis —Beeswing. He is a full brother to Viking, Hive and The Stinger and half brother to Cordite and Honeybee. In- such a close finish the “man on top” is entitled to some praise. W. Powell is probably the best all-round horseman in Australia, and one of tho few jockeys who is a judge of pace. He was formerly connected with J. Scobie’s stable, and rode Malster, Paul Pry and Clean Sweep in their engagements, until one day at Caulfield last Autumn, when Air Forrest’s Clean Sweep, a 15 to 1 chance with Powell up, beat his stable companion, Sir Rupert Clarke’s Paul Pry, a 5 to 4 chance. Since then Powell has to find other employment, and has done very well. He won the .Grand, National Hurdle Race at Fiemington on Shoddy, and the South Australian Derby on Ritualist. Hymettus has incurred the full penalty in the Alelbourno Cup, which brings his impost uu to 9st lib.
Mr Leslie Alacdonald is unlucky in the Caulfield Cup. Last year he sent out a favourite in Kinglike, who finished in the ruck, and on Saturday last what appeared to be tho best of good things in Wakeful was beaten, by half a head by a game horse and a good horseman in record time. Wakeful has Bst 101 b in tho Alelbourne Cup, in which race she will meet Hymettus on 31b better terms- Flagship is engaged ia the Melbourne Cup with 6st 91b. Troubridge, tho Nursery Handicap winner, was bred’ in South Australia, where ho is owned, and raced successfully in that State last month. Ho was bred by his owner, and is a full brother to the well-performed Dirk Haxnmerhand. All three youngsters are engaged in tho Maribyrnong Plate and other events at tho V.R.C. Meet. ingManlook, who got homo, in the Windsor Handicap, is owned by the Perth sportsman, Air C. N. Kidman. He won the previous race (the Gwyn Nursery Handicap) as a two-year-old at Caulfield last season, and performed successfully in South Australia. Troubridgo and Manlock are trained by J. Patterson, and were ridden by L. Kuhn. Wairiri is owned in Perth, but is a member of J. E. Brewer’s string. RACING IN ENGLAND. PRESS ASSOCIATION.
