OPERA HOUSE. There was a fine audience at the Opera House last night to see the second per. formanos hy the John E. Sheridan Com. pany of "Conn the Shanghraun.” The piece was represented with credit by the whole of the performers, and the audi. enre proved to be enthusiastic. To-morrow night will be presented for the first time here a merry farcical comedy entitled "A Trip to Chicago," Mr Sheridan appearing as "Johanna Murphy,” a character in which he revels and in which bis friends delight. .The moonlight gar. den party in the second act (wherein an illuminated scene of the Chicago Exhi. bition is shown) is sure to be attractive, as it is full of song and dance and novel features. Extensive preparations are being made by Mr Sheridan for a production of "Uncle Tom' Cabin. I ’’, The production will be a dramatised version by Mr Sheridan himself of Mrs H. B. Stowe’s-world-renowned book, and since Mr Sheri, dan is American by birth and fully acquainted with the "Sunny South” the niece as presented should faithfully pour, tray the dramatic incidents of Mrs Stowe’s work. All the original plantation melo. dies will be introduced, and a concise and coherent series of living stage pictures will be introduced which will depict slave life in America as it was in the bad old days of 1850. THEATRE ROYAL. The four Rianos, now appearing with the Gaiety Company at the Theatre Eoval, are presenting a novel and remark, ably clever sketch entitled "A Scientific Experiment.” A professor, a hired girl, and two “'monkeys” take part in the acrobatic comedy. The animals get loose and the man of science and the servant have a lively time in dodging them. In this amusing fashion some ex. ceptioually daring and dashing feats of contortion and tumbling are gone through by the agile quartette. The lady mem. her of the troupe holds her own well in the acrobatic roughJand.tumble. The company’s programme generally is very attractive this we^k. FEDERAL HALL. The Empire Company, now in its tenth week, continues to attract good audiences to its new quarters at the Federal Hall. The bright little theatre is being made very attractive by the management. Among the performers who will appear with the company on Saturday night are the Mahers, sketch artists, who are com. ing from the South in the steamer Wai. hora: Mr Howard Burns, tenor vocalist; Mr Fred Symonds, comedian; and Miss Ivy Fulton, serio-comic. The Bowen street Congregational Schoolroom was well filled on Tuesday evening, when an attractive programme of items (arranged by Mrs Lindsay) was presented. The contributors to the programme were Mesdames Popham. Pearn and Lindsay. Misses Burnett and Ranswell, and Messrs J. M. Clark. R. Robertson. Bar rier, Bannister and members of the choir. The accompaniments were played by Mr Cyril ToWsey. The subscribers to Messrs? Barnett and Hoppe’s concerts are requested to note that the last of the three concerts take' nlaoe this evening at the Svdney street Schoolroom. The items to be plaved include a piano and violin sonata hy Huber a quartette bv and pianc and violin solos. All tickets nnused may be used at this concert. The Petone branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union held the'an. niversarv tea and concert in the Oddfellows’ Hall la=t night. The attendance was .large. Desudte the unfavourable weather, an enjoyable time was spent.
