STATE FINANCE. IMMIGRATIpNBESTRIOTION. SYDNEY. October. 2. The New South Wales Assembly has adopted a resolution in favour of railway employees working not more than forty-eight hours weekly. ADELAIDE, October 2. The State revenue for the quarter decreased by £104,000 ag compared with the last corresponding quarter. MELBOURNE, October 2.
In the House' of Representatives the Immigration Restriction Bill passed through committee. A provision was inserted to prohibit the introduction of contract manual labour, skilled workmen for new industries being exempted. Crews for coasting vessels are allowed to be brought out provided the wages are the same as those in force in Australia. COLOURED LABOUR IN QUEENSLAND. v MELBOURNE, October 2. The Pacific Islands Labourers Bill has been circulated. Its main provisions are that no Pacific Island labour shall enter 'Australia after 31st March, 1904, and none shall enter before i that date excepting under licenses. During 1903 licenses will he allowed for. three-fourths of the number of Ishuiders who are returned to thiir native . islands during the present year, and during 1903 to not more than half those who are returned to their islands. No agreement is to remain in force after December, 1906. Persons exempted are those who have resided in Queensland continuously for five years prior to September, 1884 those employed as part of ships’ crews, and those possessing exemptions under the Immigration Restriction Act. '
