PRESS ASSOCIATION, NELSON, September 20. At a meeting of the committee to night some arrangements were made relative to the celebration of the sixth anniversary of Nelson, which will continue through the first week of February next. INVERCARGILL, September 20. At a largo meeting held at Orepuki last night, resolutions were passed urging the Government to restore the duty on oil and the Shale Company’s products until such time as the industry is firmly and payably established. It was decided to communr cate with the Chamber of Commerce and cue labour unions on tbe subject. AUCKLAND, September 20. The Governor has sent a cheque for five guineas to the New Zealand Literary and Historical Association, to bo offered as a special prize in the association's series of competitions. At the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Con. oily sentenced Bridget Cronin to twelve months’ imprisonment on charges to which she had pleaded guilty of forging a number of receipts. Mr 3. C. Martin, who appeared for tbe prisoner, asked for probation, but the application was retused. The City Council last night resolved to frame a by law to prevent expectorating on footpaths. It was pointed out that a similar regulation was in force in Syoney, at Wanganui, and all over America. Mr Charles Alexander Woolley has been oppointed Superintendent of the Fire Bri gade. Mr Wollcy, who is about 39 yew’s of age, joined the London Metropolitan b'ire Brigade under Captain Shaw, and has servedunder the south Australian Eire Brigade Board since June, 1885, An explosion of fumigating materials on the steam launch Presto gutted the forepart of the launch. The seats, lining, fleor and bulkhead were blown to atoms. A man named Bredney, who was in chaige, escaped with a few bruises.
