AUCKLAND v. TARANAKI. piIESS ASSOCIATION. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 19. The match Taranaki v. Auckland was played to.day on the Recreation U round in beautiful weather. A iignt breeze blew across the ground. The attendance was about 3000. Taranaki won the toss, ana Cunningham kicked off for Auckland. Alien returning to McGregor, who kicked well up the held. A free kick followed for off side. O'Dowda (Taranaki) making a good but unsuccessful attempt at goal. From a scrum some good passing took place between the Auckland backs, but waa spoiled by Absolum missing a pass. The game was now stopped for a time. Carter (Taranaki) having the small bone of his leg broken. T. Smith took his place. ,On resuming, Kiernan got the ball from a scrum, and passed to R. McGregor, who ran to within ten yards of the Taranaki lino, and then passed to Absolum. who waa splendidly collared. Auckland was now playing a grand game, and Taranaki had to play all they knew to keepNthe line clear. A free kick for holding the ball enabled Taranaki to clear their line. After some good pla by Humphries. Allen and Mynott, play was transferred to the Auckand quarters, and a scrum being formed, Kiernan got the ball, and eluding the Taranaki backs, ran to Pillinger (Taranaki full), and then passed to Auckland, who scored in a good position. Cunningham kicked a beau tiful goal. After some give and take play, Kiernan again got possession, an. passed to R. McGregor, who was collared. Absolum got l hold of tho ball, and nearly scored, being pushed out at the Taranaki corner flag- Half time was called shortly after. Glasgow (Taranaki) started the ball in the second spell, and the home team started the attack vary strongly, hut the Auckland forwards, by a good dribbling rush, took the play past the half-way line. Absolum. picking up smartly, made a dash down the line, but wag pushed out near tho twenty five flag. From the throw_in the ball went to Fookes. who. speculated, kicking out near the half.way. A free kick to Auckland for off-side and an interchange, of kicks between .the backs of both sides ended in McGregor kicking out in the Taranaki twenty-five. Kiernan next , started a passing rush, the ball going through the hands of Asher and McGregor, the fatter being finely stopped when looking dangerous. Auckland again gave their op ponents a taste of their passing ability, the ball going through the hands of nearly all the backs. , McGregor slipped when near the Taranaki goal .line. Smith (Taranaki) next got the ball, but lost the ground gained through a bad pass. Taranaki next transferred nlay to the visitors' quarter, but the atter’s lines were cleared by good passing, and Buokland getting possession, made a good run along touch, eventually being_ thrown out about ten yards from the Taranaki goal line. Absolum again made a good run to within a few yards of the goal, but lost an hlmost certain score by not pass, ing. Taranaki wag penalised for off" side, and Cunningham bad a shot at goal, the ball falling a few feet short. Fookes saved by a good kick up field, and Kiernan had an unsuccessful but good shot at goal. The. Taranaki forwards, headed by O'Dowda and Glasgow, took -the play to the visitors’ end. but • over eagerness spoiled any chance of a score. Taranaki made great efforts now to score, but Asher kicked over Taranaki's heads, when the latter were almost over the line, Fookes forcing. The play then'jaced. up and down the. field at a great pace, nei ther side getting much advantage. Flay waa stormed for a time on account of Cunningham (Auckland) receiving a nasty kick on the eye, Frorfx the re sumption Auckland maintained an -aggressive attitude, and were nearly scoring just on the call of.time, Bjnokland being pushed into touch in.goal. The game ended—Auckland 5, Taranaki 0. Suth. erland, Buokland. Asher and Kiernan, among the backs; Cunningham, S. Mo. Gregor, Tyler and Nicholson in the for wards, all played a grand game for Ancle, land. For Taranaki, Pillinger, Fookes. Hunter. Mvuott and Allen (backs), and O’Dowda,, Christie. Glasgow, Glen n and Hamblyn were conspicuous. Mr A. Campbell (Wellington) refereed. The (pane was stnbbornlv fought from beginning to end. but Auckland’s superior, back nlay enabled them to win. The Auckland team is being entertained to-night at the annual "social” of the Stax Football 'Club.

Staples, G. >A. Dawson, D. Isaacs; F. Smyth, M. Ellis, H. Crespin, L. Cloako. Mr H. MoKeowen will be referee, and the Eev J. Q. Bartlett and Mr F. Bobiason linesmen.

The following will represent the Marist Old Boys’ Society in the annual match With St. Patrick’s College at Berhampore to-morrows— Guise, Keenan. Brady, Gamble (2), McDonald, O’Reilly, Fits gibbon. O’Connor. Foley. Gibbs (2),- Collins. Healy, Blewman* Kelleher, Pollock, Kelly, Jones.

The final of the Association senior char ity and junior challenge cups will be played off on the Athletic Part to morrow; The Diamonds and Rovers meet in the senior, - and the Swifts and Dia. mends in the junior match. The Rovers team in the senior match is as follows: Moore, Williams, Moss, Fraser, Pye Smith, Kerr, Clark, Baton, Howie. Auld, Stranger.
