YORKSHIRE SOCIETY.

ANNUAL DINNER. Tbo sixth annual dinner of the Yorkshire Society of New Zealand was held at the Trocadero last night, when there was an attendance of about ninety members and guests. The chair was occu. pied by the Rev J. C. Andrew, president of the society. His Excellency the Governor, who was attended by the Hon C. Hill-Trevor. was seated on the chairman’s right, and his Honor the Chief Justice on his left. The Premier (Right Hon R. J. Seddon) and the Mayor of Wellington (Mr J. G. W. Aitken) were also among the guests of the evening.

After the loyal toasts had been honoured, the chairman proposed the health of “The Governor.” Lord Eanfurly. in reply, said it gave him very great pleasure to be again among the members bf the (society at their annual gathering. He congratulated them on the fact that Yorkshire, had this season won the cricket championship of the counties of England. "Our Native County” was proposed by Professor Easterfield, a Doncaster native, and responded to by tbe Rev J. Sykes, who acknowledged himself to be "a Leeds loiner.” Mr W. Franklin. Browne, a colonist of many years’ standing. proposed “The land we live in.” The toast was responded to by the Premier, who said that every visitor who came to New Zealand carried away with him a favourable impression of the colony. "Our Guests” was proposed by Mr 11. Field, who remarked that he did not think there was any Yorkshire society in the world! which was so highly honoured in respect of guests ns the Yorkshire Society of New Zealand. The Premier joined with the chairman in expressing regret at the absence of the Hon William Rolleston, who is at present indisposed in this city. Mr Seddon added that be was glad to see among those present Captain Rolleston, whom be congratulated on his promotion. Sir Robert Stout, in an eloquent speech, urged tbe necessity for striving to bring about the brotherhood of man and so fulfil tbs old proclamation of “'Peace on earth, good will towards men.” The Mayor expressed his pleasure at being present at the dinner. Captain Rolleston said his father was improving in health every day, an announcement which was received with hearty cheers. The toast of "The f orksbire Society” was proposed by Mr James Allen, M.H.R., and replied toby the President. Mr Charles Wilson proplsed "Town and Trade,” and a response was made by the Mayor, who stated tbit in his opinion the trade of Wellington was in as sound a condition to-day as it had ever been. Mr John C. Andrew proposed tho toast of “'The Press,” which was responded to by the newspaper representatives.

Songs were given by Mr H. Smith, Mr A. H. Medhurst, Mr R.-G. Applognrth, Mr Max Eller, and the Hon Colonel r eHwick. M.L.C. The accompanist was Mr David Kenny. Some amusing anecdotes were told by Mr Charles Wilson. Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from the Hon W. Rolleston. Dr H. Walker (president of tho Auek'aurl Yorkshire Society), and Mr Arthur Stanley Hill (honorary secretary of the Ynrk J ‘ shire Society of Canterbury).
