MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

MONDAY. AUGUST 19. (Before Mr W. B. Haselden, S.M.) Three men and one woman, charged with drunkenness, were dealt with as first offenders. For the same offence .Michael Canavan was fined 10s, in de; fault forty-eight hours’ imprisonment; William Barker wa.s fined 20s, in de. fault seven days’ imprisonment; and Henry McCormack was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Edward Wilson, charged with escaping from legal custody at Shelly Bay on the loth instant, and with assaults ing Constable Glass, with intent to prevent apprehension, was remanded for a week. Sub-Inspector Wilson stated that Constable Glass was still under the doctor’s orders.

Harry Geary, a boy, appeared on re. mand to answer a charge of having on the Hth instant -attempted to commit theft from the warehouse of James Phillips. He was convicted and discharged, after his father, who undertook to send him up country, had been told to make him understand that he would have to be more careful in future. Fanny Cowan, charged with the theft cn the 17th instant of half=asovereign, the property of Mary Rear, don, was remanded till to-morrow, on bail. A lad named Frederick Gorrie was charged with the theft, between the 28th July and the 2nd instant, at Whiteman’s Valley, of four cows, valued at £2B, the property of James Chertbam, and of two cows, valued at £l4, this property of Thomas Russell. Sub. Inspector Wilson said the defendant was arrested on. Saturday afternoon. The police asked for a remand for a week, with a view possibly to a further remand to Carterton. A remand, on bail, was granted till the 26th mst.
