FIRES.

By smart work by the Fire Brigade under Superintendent Hugo, an outbieak of fire in Boulcott street, at 5 a.m. yesterday was checked just in time to prevent a very serious loss. Three calls were leeeived at the Fire Brigade Station almost at the one moment, to a boardinghouse leased by Mrs Annie Young from the Compton estate. The fire had started in one of the front rooms on the upper floor, and the building being an old wooden one the flames quickly spread. loitun ate! y a good supply of uater was available, and the brigade was thus enabled to confine the fire to the quarter m which it originated. The.sash and door factory of Messrs Compton Bros, on the one side and a two-story house occupied by Mrs Andrews ou the other, bad very narrow escapes. The upper noon, of the boardinghouse waa more or less damaged by fire and water, the contents of the rooms practically destroyed. The ground floor and contents were damaged by water. Mrs Young’s furniture was insured m the New Zealand office for 41150. The Liverpool, London and Globe office hold a risk of £3OO on the building. Some of the boarders are heavy losers. A num-, her of articles of furniture were removed from the house of Mrs Andrews, as the building at one time appeared to be in great danger. The house is. owned by Mr T. G. Macarthy.
