CUSTOMS CLEARANCES.
STICIAt TO THE “mils.” AUCKLAND, August 13. Some of the local merchants have been clearing tea and candles from bond in anticipation of alterations in the tariff. It is felt that replacing!; the dutyon candles, while ad”ding to the revenue, would also have the advantage of foster ing a local industry, and that such a step is not unlikely to bo taken if any increases are made in Customs dues. As to tea, the merchants feel salfe in clearing their stocks, because under any circumstances there is no chance of the duty, being reduced on this article. In some quarters it is anticipated chat rice, sugar and kerosene are likely to have portion of the duty reimposed before any increase will take place on tea.
Over two thousand pounds were received by tho Customs Department in Wellington yesterday for duty on tea cleared from the local bonds. Five of the principal wholesale finms cleared every package they were holding, and practically only one firm left any tea in bond. The movement wa.s evidently made in view of an increase being anticipated in the duty on tea. Apart from tb Q clearance of tea and one line of English bottled beer, there is no other unusual clearance to chronicle.
