HIGH PRICES FOR SHORTHORNS IN AMERICA

Particulars of further Shorthorn sales in the United States show that the “red. white and roans” are in as great demand as ever. In the second week of the past month four sales took place in different towns in lowa, and at each the thousand-dollar mark was reached. The best average was obtained at the sale of animals belonging to Mr N. A. Lind, Eolfe, North-West lowa, a wellknown breeder, who has a sale annually. This gentleman disposed of fifty head for a total of £5,441, or an average per head of nearly £IOB 16s 6d. No fewer than six animals made over a thousand dollars, and. twenty others made £IOO or over. The top figure was 1485 dollars or £297, which was obtained for an ’imported two-year-old heifer named Turquoise, sire .Prince of Sanquhar, the next highest price being £275, paid for Mysie of Aberdeen 4th, a red with whit* marks, calved on. January 23rd, 1896, sire Highland Chief. Although this herd mad* the average, the highest figure of the week was registered at the sale of animals belonging to Messrs C. C. Bigler and Sons , Hartwick. The sum was 1775 dollars, or about £355, and this was realised for a red cow calved on February 9th, 1897, named Mary of Bluff View. Curiously enough, the number of animals at this sale which went at prices oyer a thousand dollars was also six, whilst eigbten sold at figures well over - £IOO. The average of this herd was over £lO7 6s for fifty-one animals. At the other two sales the averages were £56 for fifty-one head, and £63 odd for fortythree head.
