MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 2. (Before Mr W. ITHaselden. S.M.) Lucy Ludlow, convicted for drunkenness m May last, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness on the previous day. She was also charged with being an idle and disorderly person having no lawful visible means of sunpprt. She was fined ss, or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, on the charge of drunkenness. and the second charge was dismissed on the understanding that siie entered the Salvation Army Home.
A young mail named Martin Brady, who appeared with his head in bandages, was charged with drunkenness, having been previously convicted. He was fined 40s, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. James Jennings, with previous convictions on July 26th and 29th, was similarly dealt with. Charles James Barron was fined ss, or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, on a charge of drunkenness, and for breaking a pane of glass valued at 12s. the property of Elizabeth Beaubear, was fined 20s, and ordered to pay 12s costs, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. An elderly man, named Thomas Jones, with numerous convictions for theft, was charged with stealing a garden hose and other articles, valued at 20s, the property of R. A. Holmes, Salamanca road. Accused admitted selling the stolen pro. perty, but denied having stolen it. Jones was further charged with assaulting Martin Brady in the cell at the Police Station at an early hour yesterday morning. He pleaded not guilty. Brady stated that Jones pulled him off the bench in the cell on to the floor, and kicked him on the head. Dr Teare, who attended to Brady’s injuries, stated that he had a wound on the head, and another on the right eye. both of which were bleeding. On the charge of theft Jones was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and on the charge of assault two months, the sentences to he cumulative. Cornelius Mahoney was fined 20s, in default seven days’ imprisonment/ for behaving in a disorderly manner on Lambton quay while drunk. Jessie McCormick was fined 10s, or forty-eight Ihours’ imprisonment, for drunkenness.
