SOME VALUABLE'PROPOSALS.
THE CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUS
The Water Supply Committee of the Citv Council mane a valuable report to that body last nigfet on the vexeu questiou of water supply. Tho report snow oil : 1. That thev had had a special report from the City Engineer on die question of increased water supply, which, in con junction with his previous report to the Council of the -Htn May, 1900, and the 10th November, ISOO, they had carefully considered; also, they had had several conferences with the Engineer on tho sub. jeefc of his various reports. From the suggestion and advice so obtained, the committee recommended the following as a scheme of -water supply as well for tho higher levels ns tho city generally: (a) That tho catchment area above the present property of the “Council at the Karori 1 Reservoir be acquired bv the 'Council : (b) that an ad ditional dam bo constructed m tho stream abovo the 'present Karori re servoir. in order to conserve as much of the water as possible, which will be gathered bv this catchment area; (c) that all the higher levels of the city be served from this source alone, and the reticu latiou added to and altered accordingly; (d) that a new dam be constructed at Wainui above the present one. and at tho junction of George's-Creek with the main Wainui stream. Before, however, finally recommending the above scheme to the Council, the committee -asked power, in view of the verv large cost necessarily to be incurred, to obtain the opinion of one or more outside engineers thereon. In the meantime they mad© the follow, ing additional recommendations; —fa) Th"t meters be provided on the mains at both waterworks and their entrances into the city; (b) that any additional land found necessary to secure the nurity of the catchment area at Wainni be acquired: fcl that the Government ho apnroached with a view to having vested in the Conn ei l that portion of the Forest Reserve' at Wainni within the catchment area. In ’ccpelusion. the committee expressed the opinion that rs soon as possible after the completion of the abowe scheme (“f adopted) a new main should be brought, into the citv from Wainui, and so finally complete the water -imply of Wellington and its'extensions (if any).
