NEW USES FOR ACETYLENE.

The extraordinary output of calcic carbide on the Continent, far in excess of the market demand for illuminating purposes, has brought a number of alternative uses for acetylene gas to the front, several of which are interesting. An acetylene gun has been devised in Lyons, and used with great success to divert threatening hailstorms from damaging growing crops. The gun, or a battery of them, is connected with a generator having an arrangement of valves by which the gas is mixed inside the gun with a proportion of atmospheric air, and the charge fired by an electric igniter. The concussion, as stated, is extremely violent. Acetylene is also being used for the production of lamp-black, to be used for paints and pigments, while in Eussia the carbide furnishes a pure alcohol at a cost that approximates to 4d a gallon.
