NEW PLYMOUTH.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) Friday, 9.15 p.mAt the Police Court to-day a young man named Connott was charged with assaulting a settler named Sheppard near New Plymouth by pointing a gun at him. Connett, while out shooting, came on to Sheppard’s boundary. The latter, without warning, fired at Con* nett’s dog, but missed, the shot going near Connett, ,-,who being surprised, jumped round with his gun pointing towards Sheppard. Sheppard then fired again, and wounded the dogj. After some further words, during which Sheppard threatened to have Connett tried for assault, the latter went away, but, being frightened, offered to give Shep* pard his gun if he would say nothing about the matter. The Magistrate said Conner's action was only what anyone might have done, and dismissed the case. Connett, being further charged with trespass on Sheppard’s property, was fined 20s and costs. _ The work of reclamation at the railway station is proceeding apace. Today the new tunnel for diverting theHuatoki river was used and the stream partly sent through the opening made in the training wall. Next week a large gang’ of men will he put on to fill ,in the earthwork. The work had to he stop* ped lately e,wing to the locomotives being required for fra file in connection with the Royal visit holidays. The question of a new license for the building to bo known as the Hotel Commonwealth has been again adjourned by the Licensing! Bench till Monday next. On that day the Bell Block Hotel license will have run out, so there is some speculation as to what the Magistrate’s decision will be. Meantime the building is to be opened on Monday next without a license. The local cadets arrived _ home at 4.30 this morning. To-night they marched through the town, headed by the Garrison Band, and ar e now being entertained afc dinner by a number or admiring friends. The beys were delighted at the trip, in spite of many inconveniences suffered.
