CITY COUNCIL.

The Wellington City Counil met hast night. The Mayor presided, and there were also present—Councillors Duke, Win. der. fjodher, Evans. McLaren, Tolhursr, Murdoch. Izard and Nathan. Leave of absence was granted to MessrsBarber, Devine and Smith. A number of cab drivers asked that the Council should reconsider the ease of M. O’Shea, who had been deprived of hi; license. —The Council decided to take no action. An application received through the town clerk of Melrose that the Council should erect street lamps at Bell road was sent to tlio Lighting Committee. A letter from Mr George Bradlev asking for repairs to Oxford street was referred to the -Works Committee. A similar letter in regard to-.VfeJn sleet, from Mr Henry Wright and others, was sent to tho same committee. An application from the Wellington Scenery Preservation Society for a grant of trees was referred to the Reserves Com niitteci. Applications for a crossing in Victoria street, a right-of-way in the same street, and right-of-way off Hay street, were sent to the Works Committee. A complaint from tho Town Clerk of Melrose in reference to an alleged nuisance on the Town Belt near Kiibirnie was referred to the Inspector. * Mr T. L. Barker asked that the case of Mr P. .lohnston, late nightwatchman at the Fire Station, should receive further consideration from tho Council. —This letter was sent to the Fire Brigade Commit, tee. Messrs W. and O. Turnbull and Co. v/ote asking permission to run an electric light wire either overhead or undergound from a now factory they propose to build on one of their vacant sections to the new building of Messrs Levin and Co., as they were arranging with that firm for the sup. ply of electricity.- Tho , application was referred to the Works Committee. The Works Committee recommended — 1. That consent be granted to a right-of-way 4ft 4in wide at Macdonald crescent, as applied for by -Sir Kenneth on condition that it be not used ae a building frontage, such condition to be registered against tho title. 2. That the ‘■■■••s submitted by Messrs Skerrett and Wylie of their proposed nsw building at Lambton quay be approved, subject to the 4jin wall being properly bonded into the existing wall, and to the joists being laid in'Such existing wall to a depth of 4iin, all to the satisfaction of the City Engin. cer.—The report was adopted. The Legislation Committee recommended that a surrender-of Messrs Meadows and Routh’s lease of section No. 110, John, ’aton street, bo accepted; and a new lease granted to ‘them under the 'Wellington City Leasing Act, 1900, at an annual rental of .£77 ; and that there be a condition in such lease that tho lessors, within three moifths, commence to build, nd within nine months completely construct a building on the said section of a value of not less than £1750 On the motion of Councillor Izard, the following words were added to the clause:—“And that such new lease bo taken up within twenty-one days from the Ist of July, 1901.” In this amended form the recommendation of tho commit tee was agreed to. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the application of the Wellington College Governors for a reduction in the price of water was not granted.' Accounts amounting to .£6543 were passed for payment. Councillor Luke asked if it were correct that a four - inch pipe had been broken ’’during the construction of the Kelburne tunnel ? Mr Eounthwaite explained that the four-inch pipe was severed to -allow a bridge to bo constructed; it was not broken, and had the subsidence not recently occurred, the pipe would have been connected before this. The residents of Clifton terrace had since had'the benefit of tho supply direct from the high level reservoir. They had formerly obtained their water from Wainui-o-mata, and had had nothing like the supply they were receiving now.
