DUNEDIN DAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, Juno 20. Mr J. Somerville, who has resigned his position as architect to the Otago Education Board, was appointed in 1875, a year before the abolition of provinces. At first be was partly under the Provincial Government and partly under, the Board, of which body Mr Donald Reid was then chairman. The Board yesterday accepted the resignation with regret, and unanimously passed a resolution expressing its best thanks to Mr Somerville for .his long and faithful services. Mr Somerville proposes to retire into private life, and he will continue to reside in, Otago. Mr Frank Hyams is making medals to be presented to the nurses who went to South Africa. The medals will be artistic and valuable. The Government has sent for Colonel Robin to handle the 1900 mounted men who are to take part in the Christchurch review. Up to the last moment it was not believed that the city members would send their disapproving tele, gram to Sir Joseph Ward. In fact, one of them told me in the afternoon that, so far as he knew, it would not be sent, and now it has gone many supporters of the Liberal party think it a mistake and needlessly abrupt. A poll of Dunedin would show that many thousands of residents sincerely congratulate Sir Joseph. Mr Weiss, the champion billiardist, will shortly leave the colonies and settle in England, where the prospects of making money in his line are infinitely superior.
