By “Combination.” Results of Saturday’s matches: —Senior.—United, 2, beat St. Johns; 1; Wellington, 4, beat Karori, 1- Junior.— United, 2, beat Waiwotu, 1; Karori, 6, beat Victoria College, 2; Wellington, fl, beat St. John’s, 4. The first round of the senior contest has now concluded, leaving United with 6 points, Wellington 4, Karori 2, and St. John’s nil. On Wednesday, the 20th inst.. a team from the_ Manawatu Hockey Association will visit Wellington and play our local senior reps. The following team is suggested as worthy wearers of the yellow and black:—Full backs, Ashbolt, Ford, Wheeler; halves, Gore or J. Campbell, Balharry, O’Sullivan; forwards, Smythe, G. Davies, Cooper, Menzies, Organ.

KARORI I. v. WELLINGTON I. This game was rather a boil-over, as the suburban men had been expected to have been rather a hard nut for the city team to crack. However, the latter taking to heart the lessons of the previous Saturday’s match with United, showed great improvement in form, and , the score, four goals to ong, gives a very fair idea of the nature of tho game. . Karori scored first, just after the start for which they have to thank Prqston, the Wellington goal, who was beaten by trying to hit a hopping ball on the fly instead! of fielding it, as there was plenty of time to do. This was Karori's only score, though the Davies Bros., and they were the only forwards in tho defeated team ' who showed form,- battled hard. Moxham and McKenzie on the wings had little to do, and did not do it well. Harvey, the promoted centre was overweighted by his opponent, Cooper, and generally the forward line suffered through want of support from the backs. Dibley. centre half, did well in the first spell, but in the second showed great want of form and was not always to hand when wanted. J. Campbell, the right half, was the pick of the line, but his brother on tho left was not up to tho mark, leaving Bridge, his opposing winger, practically a clear field. Qf the full backs Dryden was an easy first. Spiers was fair, hut rather slow, and Dasent in goal was not so reliable as he might, and should have been. Of the Wellingtons Preston (in goal) was fair, Wheeler and Atkinson both fielded and hit well, Balharry played a capital game at centre half. The wing halves, Reed and Jackson, played good defensive games, but did not hit hard enough. Of the forwards Hull played well, Cooper in the centre was in good form, bullying and passing in pleasing style, except for his habit gf dribbling the ball with only one hand on his stick. Menzies and Bridge, on the right wing, played woll together, Bridge especially playing up to form and centreing wellC. Campbell might have paid this pair; a little more attention with advantage to his side.

ST. JOHNS’ V. UNITED. This match resulted in. a win for ilia latter Club by two goals to 1. The result was in doubt until the last five minutes, when Cooke scored the second goal for United, thus winning the match. The United forwards were decidedly off colour on Saturday and were unable to pass the St. John’s full backs. Cooke and McLean played fairly well, but their, shooting was indifferent. Hjorring was in good form, but the left half played miserably and was the weak spot in the team. This was, however, only his second game of hockey, and accounts for his weakness. Ashbolt again showed up well at full. Ford, for St. Johns’ played the best game on the ground, hitting very clean and hard- Pope also played well at full back. Ballingall at half worked very hard, but should feed his forwards more. Simm, Williams and Hollis played up in the forward line. Mr W. R. S. Hickson was entirely successful with the whistle. JUNIOR GAMES. Karori second defeated Victoria College by five goals to two after a capital game. For the suburban team Hill, Welling, Henderson and Wilson played well, as did/Quartley, Deere and Richmond for the College. Karori played one man short. The positions of the various teams in for the Junior Cup are as follows:—Karori 6, United 5, Wellington 6, St. Johns’ 2, Waiwetu nil, Victoria College nil.
