NEW ZEALAND CITIES.
CENSUS OF 1901. PRELIMINARY RETURN. Figures extracted from the preliminary return of the census of 1901 in regard to the population of the four centres of New Zealand have already been published. Tho populations of Uie respective cities and their suburbs were shown to be as follows:—Auckland, 67,232; Wellington, 49,292; Christ-, church, 57,037; and Dunedin, 52,398. Tho respective rates of increase in tho five years 1896-1901 were as follows: —■ Auckland, 16.69 per cent.; Wellington, 18.04 per cent. ; Christchurch, LI. 12 per cent.; and Dunedin, 10.82 per cent. It may ho mentioned that the Registrar-General (Mr E. J. von Daclolszen) holds that there is no reason why Potone should bo included as a suburb of Wellington City in this connection. lie points out that Putono is separated from Wellington by several miles of uninhabited country, and is in other ways quite distinct from the city —as much distinct, in fact, as any portion of the Hutt Valley. The following interesting details of the population of tho four chief centres of the colony have been supplied by Mr von Dadelszcn:- —
