According to a Press Association message the United States warship Brooklyn leii Auckland on Saturday morning for big gun practice in Huuraki Gulf. She was to sail for this port yesterday, and should arrive to-morrow. Hie Brooklyn will proceed hence to Sydney to replenish her coal bunkers, after which she ivill rejoin the American squadron in the Philippines. Captain Butt, who went down to Lyttelton on Friday evening, is acting as coastal T'i lot to the Lynalder. and will accompany the vessel to Auckland, j Contracts have been signed by Captain John Crowley, of Boston, for the construction of two seven-masted schooners —the first vessels of this typo and the largest '■■ailing vessels in The world. Each will carry GOOD tons of freight. They nro being built for a service between the 'Philippines and New York. Captain Crowley recently built the six-master G. Wells, which on her maiden trip from Mew York to Havana. beat the mail si earner by three hours. Again complaint has to be made of the method of keeping the telegraph notice board. No mention whatever was made on tho board regarding the departure of the Mapourika from Now Plymouth for Wellington on Friday. These omissions cause considerable annoyance in shipping circles and confusion amongst the friends of persons travelling by sea. The scow Oban arrived yesterday from West Wanganui, with a cargo of flax. The barque Helen sailed yesterday morning, in ballast, for Naipara, where she will load timber for Sydney. The Tarawera did not leave Lyttelton till 11.30 p.m. on Saturday, owing to detention through a Home steamer which was leaving the port, blocking the fairway, huia accounts for her late arrival yesterday. 2.35 p.m. ... The Lynalder, which arrived in port yesterday from Lyttelton, is a steamer of the United States and Australasian Steamship Company, and hails from*New York. She has about 1000 tons of American goods for this port, on the discharge of which she goes to Auckland with the balance of her inward cargo. It is not yet decided what her outward loading is to be. From New York to the colony the steamer experienced fair weather, but on the passage from Lyttelton to this port strong head winds were met with, which delayed tho vessel for over six hours. The Lynalder is a steel screw steamer of 3223 tons gross and 2061 tons net register. She is 3-12 ft 2iu in length. 45ft beam and 15ft Bin in breadth. Her engines are of the most modern type. She was built in February, 1899, by R. Thomson and Sons, of Sunderland, and is owned by the Liverpool Shipping Company. Captain W. Waring is in command, with Mr H. Day as chief officer. Mr W. Johnson second, and Mr IV. Crosby third. Mr G. Dagarnor is chief engineer. Tin; steamer Kirklee has been chartered tn load produce from New Zealand for Smith Africa. Tho bnreme Onyx Ims been chartered to bring hardwood from Port iispernnee to this colony.
