SCHOOL FOR MAORI GIRLS

A meeting of Indies interested in Hit establishment of the proposed school loi, Maori girls at Auckland as a memorial to the late Queen was held this .afternoon. Speaking of what bad already been done, the secretary, Miss Keith, said thir scheme was an nnsellieh one, and met a crying need. Tho Maori people themselves had taken up tho work, and had niready helped materially. The Rev E. Bennett, a native clergyman, was abou' to make a tour of tho colony to advocate the scheme. The sum' of .£/()() had been already promised, Hawke’s Bay heading llu list 'with nearly JMOO. The speaker, ic pointing out' the urgent need for such ai institution, said tho Hukarere Maori Girls’ School at Napier was always full, and thir year 19 applications so far hud to be refused Furthermore, tho large Maori populatior of Auckland province (18,200) pointed tc Auckland as the. most suitable situation. Dr Poinare, Government Sanitary Inspector amongst the Maoris, gave an address setting forth' the need for such a school and tho responsibility of the English people in having the future of the Maoris in their keeping.
The meeting appointed a strong committee to further tho object in view.
