MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
I A deputation representing the recent-ly-formed Ratepayers’ Association of Petone waited upon Mr R. Mothes last evening, and requested him to allow himself to be nominated for the local Mayoralty. Mr Mothes decided to accede to the request. , . , c Mr G. H. Baylis, who is standing for the Melrose Mayoralty, addressed a meeting of electors in tho State schoolroom, Island Bay, last night. Mr W. Brunskill was in the chair, and there was a attendance. Mr Baylis gavo a eeneral outline of the drainage and water i supply schemes, and stated what they I would cost the ratepayers of the district. ! He promised that, if elected, ho would [ he in favour of compelling the proprie- ' tors of the racecourse estate to make and form the roads through it to their full width. He asked whether it was fair and reasonable for Mr James Reid, one of his opponents, to say that he fair Reid) would not subsidise the proprietors of the Jenkins estate to put i\ tunnel through the hill to Kilbirnie, and at the same time soy that the Council should culvert the creek which ran through the Island Bay racecourse estate. Mr F. G. Bolton is mentioned as likely to be asked to become a candidate for the City Council. Mr Edwin Arnold has definitely ’ decided that he cannot spare the time to accede to the request that he should contest, a seat in the City Council. Mr James Godber announces himself as a candidate for the Council. Last night the Municipal Progressive Association further considm’ed the task of selecting candidates wljo should • receive the support, of the association in the municipal elections. At a previous meeting a committee was empowered to prepare a list of mimes to be submitted to a general meeting for approval, and this list was placed before the association last night, as follows-.—Mayor, Mr J. G. W. Aitken; Councillors, Messrs Barber, Smith, Luke, Evans, Tolhurst, Izard, Winder, Townsend, D. J. Nathan, D. McLaren, R- McKenzie, T. 'Wardell (Warded Brothers and Co.). The meeting went into committee to consider the list, and after a discussion of about an hour and a half, resolved to postpone the selecting of candidates till Tuesday evening next, after the nominations have closed. Mr George Winder will address a meeting of burgesses at tho State School, Revaus street, on Wednesday evening next. Mr Allan Orr will address the burgesses at the corner of Mercer street at 8 o’clock this eveningA general meeting of the Ratepayers Association will bo held on Tuesday evening.
