MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
. THE PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION. ' The Municipal Progressive Association . met last night, when it was resolved, “That this association regrets that the Katepay- ■ ers* Association has been unable to afford any compromise whatever from the platform as at first enunciated in order to meet fhe views of the Municipal Progressive Association.'' I With refei once to the invitation from the Ratepayers’ Association to take part in a public mccincr, it was, after some discussion. resolved that as the two associations had failed to agree or compromise bn the points in dispute, a ioint public meeting would not serve any good purpose at present. i It was decided that the association in their efforts in regard to Miramar should (seek the assistance of the various athletic clubs using that estate. ! The following members were elected a Finance Committee:—The chairman and Messrs Darvall, Finlay McLeod and Hutcheson. This committee will deal incidentally with the question of raising a fund for the elections. : Mr Hutcheson moved that subject to their consent, Messrs D. McLaren, E. McKenzie, William Jones and Cooper should be asked to stand for the City Council as representatives of the working interests. 1 A number of members counselled tlelav in selecting candidates until it was known who were coming forward, and finally the Council of Ten formerly connected with the association was revived, and is to draw UP a list of suitable candidates. This list will be discussed at a meeting next ■Wednesday. ; MELROSE BOROUGH. ; There was a. fair attendance of ratepayers at the Kilbirnic Hall last evening to hoar Mr G. H. Baylis, an ex-council-lor and candidate for the Mayoralty of Melrose, express his views on municipal matters. Mr V. Claridge was voted to the chair. Mr Baylis said he favoured adopting the septic system of disposing of (he sewage, borrowing to construct roads, and dealing with the City Council in a fair manner regard in g tramways. He also said that they could obtain purer water than the city could supply at a cost of .£SOOO. A vote of thanks and confidence was passed.
V meet-ill?’ of municipal electors was held in the Brooklyn Churchroom yesterday evening. under the auspices of the Ohiro District Ratepayers' Association, for the purpose of hearing the views ol aspirants for the representation of Ohiro Ward on the Melrose Borough Council. Mr .T. Goer was voted to the chair. The speakers were Councillors A. H. Fnllioru, ,1. M. Walter and John Brown, Messrs Frank Jennings, J. Mclndoe, W. J. Haines, James Reid and G. Frost. Throughout the meeting the greatest interest was shown in t.ha procedings* and at times tee)ing ran high, specially in connection with the tramway question. A meeting of the /atepayers or letone will be held in the Oddfellows Hall this evening to cans ler the various loan proposals. A poll will ho taken ion the loans on th«* 13lh Mr Allan Orr’s. General Committee will meet at the Trocadero at eight o’clock this evening. . .. Mr W. A. Evans announces himselt ns a candidate for re-election to the City Council.
