ONSLOW BOROUGH.
MEETING AT WADESTOWN.
Matters affecting the improvement of the Vtadestown district were discussed at a meeting of householders held in the schoolroom last evening. Mr R. B. Wil- - presided.
Mr Carwell Cooke, who convened the meeting, explained that he had no intention to offer himself as a Councillor, and stated that Mr O'Eegan, who had promised to preside, was unable to attend. He had convened the meeting at the request of several residents. The position of the borough was not satisfactory. There was aii overdraft equal to the 'whole of next year s revenue.. Mr Cooke referred to the widening of the Waciestowu road, the proposal to light the borough by electric light, and other matters. lie thought if a committee was appointed it could do a vast amount of good for the- suburb Mr H. C. Young considered the manner in which the ranges 1 did his duty was most unsatisfactory. More animals had wandered about the streets since the ranger was appointed than before. He thought the householders should complain to the Onslow Borough Council. ' i Mr .1. Valentino referred to the I;caw j loan with which the suburb was burdened, i They were pledged for £7509 at 51, per cent. He was in favour of the borough purohas-. ing ten or twelve acres of land as a night soil depot. Ho was also in favour of the electric light as suggested by Mr Cooke. , Gas was too primitive, and no reasonable ' man could advocate! it against cdectrio i light. The light was at present half-way up Wadestown hill. He regretted the peo- ; pie of Wadestown were not more- unanimous and enthusiastic. 116 hoped the meeting would form a Municipal Association, and take a, greater interest in local affairs than in the past. 1 Mr H. C. Young brought up the question of the widening of the Wadestown road. I He referred to a scathing account of the recent accident which had appeared in the ‘‘Hew Zealand Times” that 'day. which: blamed the Council for'the state of the [road. He thought the contractor who was to supply 50,000, loads of spoil for the Har- 1 hour Board would fake, it from the road if he was subsidised to the extent of .250. They would thus have an opportunity of having the road widened. He thought the- ! City Council should do something to im- ; nrove the disgraceful state of ; the road from Mrs Ehodes’s down to the Park street steps. -
The'following committee was set up 'cr wait upon the- City Council with reference to widening .the road;—Messrs I". B. Williams, Davey, Cooke, A. E. Atkinson and You Off. Air A. E. Atkinson considered the deputation would ‘lj-c* beneficial. Both the roads and lights could be improved upon. The lights were badly nlacod.and it should not be a difficult matter to get them-alter-ed. He thought an association or committee should he formed to watch the Onslow Borough Council and the City Council. Mr Cooke moved that those present form themselves into a. committee to assist the Onslow Borough Councillors, and form deputations for any object in the direction of the advancement of the district. The following persons present handed in their names as willing to act on the committee; —Messrs Atkinson, Cooke, Dayev. Hailwood. Hooper, Jones, Mather, Mitchell. McPherson. Hickman, Bohsrts. Russell, Valentine, Wiffen and Young. On the motion of Mr Mather, seconded bv Mr Cook, it was resolved that the name of tho association be the Wadcstown Municipal Progress Association. Councillor Trout defended the Onslow Borough Council from the criticisms of previous sneakers. Ho considered the councillors had done their dutv to the best of their ability. He urged that a denutation should wait upon the Onslow Borough Council to protest against the, unsatisfactory manner in which the ranging was being carried out. Messrs Co ore. Young and Williams were appointed to wait on the Council on the loth hist.
Aii executive committee was set up .consisting of Messrs Atkinson, Valentine, Williams, Cooke ami Young. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
