At a meeting of the Band Contest Committee 10-night the arrangements for the contest were reported to be- in a. tor ward slate. Croat dissatisfaction was expressed at the action of the. Wellington Garrison Band in withdrawing at a late stage, particularly as tho contest dates wore altered to suit its convenience, and the local band, even offered to pay its train fare. It was resolved that tho Mayor telegraph to tho Defence Department with reference to obtaining leave for member# of the Wellington Band, and that the Mayor of Wellington be asked to appeal to the employers of the men. Tho opinion, was strongly expressed that Wellington should Qompeto here, as Wanganui had always been represented at previous contests.
GISBORNE, February 27.
The Gisborne Harbour Board yesterday suggested that, in view of the unsatisfactory nature of the Government valuations and their cost, the local bodies should . combine and 'secure a system of making their own valuations. These, it was urged, would bo correct and Jar Joss costly, NELSON, February 37. The first meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board, was held to-day. Mr J. Graham, M.H.R., was elected! chairman.
NEW PLYMOUTH, February 27. The .statement which has appeared in the newspapers that the reclamation works of the New Plymouth Railway Station had been considerably damaged, is incorrect. The wall was not damaged, but the sea, washing over, displaced a portion of a, -temporary track which bad been laid for filling, earthwork. NAPIER, February 27. The census shows tha t a Maori, woman at Tahoraiti, the mother of the chief Herehore, is. beyond doubt 105 years old. She claims to be 120. AUCKLAND, February 27.
The-finding of- the Conciliation Board in the painting trade dispute was accepted to-day by both sides. Journeymen’s wages are fixed at Is Id per hour., workmen over fifty years of age to receive a minimum of lid per hour. Apprentices are to he indentured for four years, with the right to work for another year elsewhere at thirty, .shillings per week. Improvers are not recognised. Waugb, who was arrested iu Sydney on a, charge of theft of jewellery at Auckland, is_ wanted in the NewSouth Wales capital in connection with a similar affair in 1897. Ho -will not bo brought back hero until tho Australian charge has been disposed of. Some missing articles have been found in a local pawnshop.
