CITY COUNCIL.

The City Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. G. W. Aitken), Councillors Anderson, Murdoch, Townsend, Will os bon, Evans, Winder, Luke, McGill, Smith, and Tolhurst. The Works Committee recommended : —That the Fire Brigade Committee be requested to report on the question of lire escapes for dwelling-houses; that the application of Messrs I. Clark and Son for leave to put a wooden front in a brick building proposed to be erected at Thorndon quay for Messrs R. Fletcher and Co. be referred to the City Engineer to deal with, or to report further to tins committee if necessary; that the offer of Mr H. A. E. Hur'ev to allow the Council to remove a bank of earth on his property for filiing-in in connection with Elizabeth street extension be declined with thanks; that the request of Mr H. Mason for refund of amount paid by him some years ago for laying a water service to his premises, Corunna avenue, bo not granted; that Messrs E. Reeves and Co. be informed, in reply to their application, that the Council cannot see its way to grant inem. the use of the unformed portion of Mein street,’ and. further, that notice be served upon them to remove their buildings from the street at once • that notice of the same kind be also served upon the, persons who are so using the unformed portion of Owen street; that Mr Thomas McKenzie be informed that the Council has trie matter of the construction of McKenzie terrace under consideration; that the petitioners for repairs to Percival street be informed that, as the street is a private one, the Council is unable to do anything in die matter; that the date for receipt of tenders for cast-iron pipes be extended for one week, viz., from February 28tn to ■March 7ih ; that notice be served on the persons concerned that the Council claims as part of the street the strip of land fenced in with posts and chains at the Albion Hotel, and that, if necessary, a case bo stated for decision of the Supreme Court; that Mr Xhomas Ward bo informed that, unless the requirements of the Council in regard to Hanson street extension aro carried out within two months, the consent of the Council to formation of the street will bo rescinded, and the road fenced off; that a water filter for the pumping station be obtained at an estimated cost of £45 ; that the sewer in Adelaide road bo extended, so as to drain the new ■ houses being erected on Town Acre 702, at an estimated cost of £ls; that notice bo served on Mr L. Stowe to abate a nuisance caused by house-drainage at his property above Tinakori road forthwith; that the detail plans and spedfications submitted by Mr E. W. Seaton of private streets between Adelaide road and Stanley street, agreed to by the Council on November 29th last, be approved, subject to their being continued through to the boundary of the acre, and provision being made for lighting thorn to the satisfaction of the City Engineer; that the plan and specification supplied re Mr W. McGill’s right-of-way at end of Walter street be approved, subject to the addition that provision be made for rolling if found necessary; that Mr M. O'Connor be again prosecuted for failing to removdTiis material from Kelburne Park, and that the consent of the Council to allow him the use of a portion'of the park ,on certain conditions be rescinded. ' The report was adopted. ■■ ■ Xho Finance Committee reported, recommending payment of accounts to the amount of £4616 4s 9d on general account, and £250 17s 6d on tramway account. —Th© report was adopted. The annual balance-sheet was taken as read, and adopted, the only comment made thereon Doing by Councillor MoGill, wloo expressed the hope that the expenditure for removal of nightsoil would disappear. The Mayor replied, stating that it was expected that the expenditure on the item would cease very shortly. The Street-widening Committee recommended that the terms offered by Mr H. F. Christie with respect to his properties in Adelaide road, Revans street and Ricldiford street be accepted, subiccfc in ©3-di C3.S© to the Corporation h©" ing able to mak© satisfactory arrangements with the leaseholders (these terms aro fully set out in the letter from Messrs j. H. Bethuno and Co. to the Citv Engineer, dated February loth); that the proceedings now in progress under the Public Works Act for acquiring Town Acre 304, Kent terrace,, bo completed, and th© freeholders and lease holders be settled with under the provisions of th© Act; that i*lr G-. Marshall be informed that the arrangement agreed upon with respect to his property at Adelaide road must he completed within a week.—The report was adopted.
