The Commander of the Forces has received the following letter from Briga-dier-Gouoral Mahon, in reference to certain strictures upon Lioutonant-Colonel Robin, contained in a letter written by a trooper from Westland, and published in the "West Coast Times” : "tloidclburg, 27th October, 1900. Dear Colonel Penton, —In answer to vnur letter of September sth, 1900, which I received to-day along with cx(racl from ‘'West Coast Times” of August 33rd, 1900, f must say that the actaxations Herein contained astonished urn. The New Zealand Contingent turder the command of LioutvColonol Robin have been serving with me for over Hirco mouths, and a better lot of officers and men I would never ask for. Colonel Robin has several times commanded his men under fire under my personal observation, and I have never bad any cause to complain of the' way in which ho has done Ms duty. In fact, it baa always been the contrary, and I have very often expressed to him and his men my appreciation of the work I hey ha ve done. CJuito recently I was ordered, 1 to leave an officer and 300 men of iny command on rn important duty, and I selected Lieut.-C'oloncl Robin ami his men for that duty. I think it is a pity that newspapers publishlefct.en like the one enclosed, as they aro generally Iho outcome of tome individual spite, but I do not think such letters can hurt! my friend Colonel Robin, as bo bolds ai very high character with the military authorities in this country.—-Yours sincerely .signed) B. Mahon, BrigadierGenera!. P.S. —You can make any use you like af this Jotter.” The troopship Orient, with a, large number of invalided Now Zealanders on board, sailed yesterday afternoon from Brisbane for Dunedin.
