SPIRITED COMPETITION AT HOME. (Received January 18. 0.34 a.m.) LONDON, January 17. ' There is spirited competition at opening- rates at the wool sales. CHRISTCHURCH; January 17. - At the third of the local series of wodl sales to-day there was a large attendance of both local and foreign buyers, and brisk sales resulted. On the whole the wool was much better in quality than at the previous sale. Fine wools showed an Advance of fully |d, but coarse and inferior sorts scarcely held their own. The colonial mills operated extensively ana outbid the foreign buyers. Out of a catalogue of 12,791- bales, 10,470 were sold. Extra super merino to 9d for “Culverden,” which has now topped the market for eight years in succession, medium to good do. 7(d to B|d; inferior, s(d to 6d; halfbred super. 7|d to Bid; medium do, 5J to 6d; inferior do, s£d to 6d; super crossbred, 6d to 7d; inferior to medium, 5Jd to 6d; inferior do, 5J to 6d; super good pieces and bellies to 75 d; medium, 4Jd .to, 5Jd;, others, 2Jd to 4d; locks. to 3d.
