AMERICAN MAIL SERVICES

THE NEW SAN FRANCISCO LINE. SYDNEY. January 17. The Hon. E. Barton (Premier of the Commonwiealth) visited thd new San Francisco mailboat Sierra, accompanied bv the American Consul, Mr Witheford, M.H.R., and a number of business men. Replying to the toast of his health, the Federal Premier referred to the friendship existing between Britain and America. Although Australians should first consider their own advantages, American interests came next, and ho had no doubt the kindly sentiments existing between Australia and America would be increased as the countries come into closer connection. Ho proposed the health of the Oceanic Company, and welcomed the first vessel in the connecting link between the Englishspeaking peoples of the Pacific. The American Consul expressed the opinion that if the navigation laws were found to be an injustice a representation to America would get the matter remedied in time.

Mr Witheford, M.H.R., toasted the Union Steam Ship Company. -
