CITY COUNCIL

The City Council met last evening. Present; The Mayor (Mr J, G. W. Aitken), Councillors Barber, Winder, laard, Evans, Townsend, Smith, Tolhurst Murdoch and Anderson. , CORRESPONDENCE. In reply to the College Governors,: it was decided that the Board be,informed thai the Fire Brigade T, Committee had the matter of providing water supply for fire-extinguishing purposes at the College, in hand, and that as soon as more buildings were, erected in the locality, steps would be taken to that end.

The Inspector of Police wrote, stating, with regard to improving the character of Haining street, that; four horses of ill-repute had recently been closed there, and several had been improved; but that so long as the class of buildings; that existed there were alloyed to' be let, tho evil would uot be entirely remedied ,* _ v Mrs Jones wrote,. approving the steps taken by the Council to put a stop to expectorating on the streets. She .also asked the Council to adopt measures to prevent people dropping skins o. frsit, etc., which were highly dangerous to traffic. The report of the Works Committee was adopted as follows.: —That the water pipes in Mein sti’eet, Corunna avenue and Douro avenue (all east of Coromandel street), and also Selwyu torrace, he replaced by 3-inch mains; that the sower, in Drummond’s lane be extended for a short distance, - at- an estimated cost of H2O; that a shorn length of drain be laid in Wesley road, fo connect with the sewer at top of Bolton street; that name plates be put up at the various cab-stands in tho city, ’ ‘ indicating the number of vehicles allowed _to stand at each place; that the City Epgincer be empowered to deal with Mr George Leggett with respect to the removal of a bank of earth at his property, Majoribanks street; that the request of the Salvation Army for an extension of time for drainage of "heir cottage in Cuba street, bo not complied with; that the Kaxori Borough Council bo required to execute certain repairs in Karori road, in accordance with the report of the City Engineer, before tho present year’s subsidy is paid over; that the request of Messrs M. Eller and Sons, with respect to de water service at their premises m Willie street, bo not complied with; that Messrs Wivth Bros, be allowed tho use for six days of a portion of the reclaimed land between Mercer street and Harris street, for their circus,, on the same terms as were fixed on the last occasion when the land was let, viz,, £3 Ss per night and the license fee. - ‘ GENERAL. Tho resolution passed on November 29th. striking a special rate of one penny in the £1 re street widening loan, was confirmed. FINANCE. The return of receipts and expenditure for December showed that the re-

ceipts were £13,438 I9s'sd"; expenditure £14,063 2s 4d. The bank account showed a debit against No. 1 Borough Fund Account of £8467 17s 4d. The following accounts showed -credits: —City Improvements Loan, £646 Is -■d; Borough Fund No. 2, £1677 14s; Loan, £1536 10s Sdf Fire Brigade Loan. £741 8s 4d; Deposit No 1, £10,500; No. 2, £3OOO.
