Varney, ’« - young woman, while ireturning front church lasi night, fell dead on the road, within a few yards of her home. Heart disease uas the cause; ■ MISHAP AT SEA. FATAL FALL FROM ALOFT. An ’ accident attended with fatal results occurred on the voyage of ihe barque John o’ Gaunt from Liverpool to Wellington. On June .‘iUtb, when in lat. 371 S.V long. 1.54 W.. an able seaman named Sydney A. Cormack was ordered aloft to bring down a couple of gaskets from the main' upper topsail.' He had just reached the upper topsail-yard, when by‘ some means lie lost:his hold, and fell on to tin 1 hatch below, striking the main yard in Ids descent. It was at once seen'that the poor follow’s ease was quite hopeless, liis hack, left arm and leg being broken, and the bones were protruding. He expired the same evening, and was buried,at sea. The weather was quite fine and the sea smooth at the time of the 1 accident. Cormack, ‘who, was only twenty years of ago, was a native of Elgin, Scotland.
Information was reoeivecl by Inspector Pender yesterday that the body oi Mr Cecil Williams' baa been found hanging front a tree in the reserve at Featberston.( It, will be remembered that the deceased,,,who was a son of Air Justice Williams, was missed early in May. -He was then staying with Dr' Palmer - at Feathersfoh, for the benefit, of .bis health. 'Previously he had; „resid-. ing with his! brother at Kohunui. , near Pahiatua.. The deceased was hi native of New Zealand,’about' twenty-five‘year* of age, and was gaining' experience .of sheep-farming as a, cadet. A wharf labourer named Thomas Kelly, aged about thirty years, and so far as, is known unmarried, died suddenly in this city yesterday • evening; r He went to board at the Wellington Dining Booms, Lainbton ouay, kept by Air F. O’Donohue” on Wednesday last. It is [reported that be had previously been drinking. At about a quarter to 7 o’clock yesterday evening be was found in a closet; where ho bad fallen against the door. ' Sergeant Cruieksbank, who was called iii, opened the door, and found that Kelly was in a state of collapse. The sergeant sent for Dr Henry, who on his arrival recommended that Kelly should be immediately removed to the hospital. The sufferer was placed in a cab without , delay, but while en route he died. The death took place at about 8 o’clock, when the vehicle, was between the Caledonian Hotel and the hospital gates’, i Sergeant ’ Cruieksbank took the, body on to the hospital. Kelly has .no relations in New Zealand,' so far as tihe police can ascertain.
