I Some of tho friends, in this district, pf the late- -Mr Nelson Mcßae have subscribed, to -place a memorial brass in-St. 'Cuthbcrl’s Chu,rch.' Manilla. The inscription roads as follows;—“Li remembrance *of R. Nelson Mcßae, who was accidentally killed at Bulls cm Wednesday, 20lh September, lS99,agcd twenty-five’ years. ■ Erected by’ ‘a few friends.” • '■ ’ ‘ At a meeting of the Tdawcra Borough Band on Wednesday iiCircular was read from the North Island Brass Band Association asking' that the band should take part.in the annual •onterst, to be bold - in Wanganui in- February next. The conductor offered his services for vigorous practice fond nights per wool:, and the band unanimously decided that it would compote. The Egmont -Agricultural and Pastoral Association has decided to hold its annual; show; on November 7th- and Bth, so as to avoid clashing _ with the AVairarapa. Sliow. . -- ■ ’ - A public meeting, convened by his AVorsltip the Mayor lias boon held to consider what steps should bo. taken -in the direction of inducing the Government to proceed with the construction of tho Tangalioc,Va 1 ley road. Tho Mayor stated that this question had been agitating tho public mind for some time*. ■When Mr, .Hcslop and:he visited AVellingtoil a sum of £3OO was placed on the Estimates for the road, but since then one of.-the Government engineers had stated, that the work would entail an expenditure .of £2OOO. The cost of acquiring the freehold of land through which the road would run was £520, and; two, owners had given 25’ acres gratis, the.-gift. being .worth about £IOO. The Mayor stated that it was needless for him to*-point out the advantages that.-would be derived by the settlers and-thp Government by the making of this.-.direct road. • . Eventually a committee consisting of the Mayor .Messrs Livingston,...Cameron, Quin, Davidson. AVinks, -Parkinson and “McLean was set, up to confer with. the member for the -district in regard -to the steps to ho taken to ensure the. success of-, the movement. i -Messrs ■A. . Humphries ,and L. r Allen, who have represented Taranaki on the’ football field for many years, have deckled to give up the game. Mr Allen Was -married ra fortnight ago, and tho footballers in this district intend making him; a,-presentation. A- special meeting of the Borough Council-was.- held last Monday evening, when. Mr. McGuire, M.H.R., attended by request to confer with the Council on the subject of the Hawera Borough; Bills. A Satisfactory’ explanation for the delay ’in; introducing- the Bills was [ given by Mr McGuire,” ■ and a, vote of 1 thanks for his attendance and explana-tion-waa unanimously passed. . . Great ’ interest is being taken in the football match - .Taranaki versus AVellington, which is to be played at-Haw-era next Wednesday.-■ Excellent.- reports of the play ;of the AA’ellingtoh. team have reached us, and I think they should just about .manage to beat Taranuki. . . iAn excellent.- rendering- of the cantata “Tho Daughter ; of Jairns” was given by the Hawera •Wesleyan choir last week. The’ principal soloists were Misses McAlpiuc,' Pacoy and Christie and Messrs Keen and McAlphie..' The proceeds will go towards building a new Sundayschool, ,‘tho present accommodation not being nearly sufficient.
