UNITED STATES PRESIDENCY
OPENING OF THE CAMPAIGN. NOMINATION OF AIR McKINLE^, (Received June 23, 1 a.ni.) NEW YORK) Juno 22. The National Republican Convention met at Philadelphia to-day to nominate a Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States. President McKinley was again nominated for the Presidency and Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, Governor of New ’York, for the Vice-Presidency. The proceedings were wildly enthusiastic. Tho platform of the Convention is eulogistic of the actions of the Government abroad, particularly in regard to Samoa and China, but is colourless and platonic towards; the Boers. There aro various indications of a friendlier feeling towards; Great Britain.
The Democrats will hold their Convention on July 4th (Independence Day) in Kansas City, Missouri. The selection of this date, and other invocations, foreshadow that the principles of the Dcelaration of Independence will be invoked against tho Republican Administration’s course of action abroad, particularly in regard to Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the Philippines, and its friendly attitude towards England. Already tho National Populist Convention has nominated Mr IV. J. Bryan. Mr McKinley’s old antagonist, for 1 lie Presidency, and Mi- Charles A. Toivnc, of Michigan, for tbo Ticc-Prcsidency. Both these gentlemen may be tbo chosen of the Democratic Convention.
