VICTORIA COLLEGE COUNCIL.

The Victoria College Council met last night. Present—Mr J. R. Blair (voted to the chair), Dr Knight, Dr Wallis, Messrs Watson, Fleming, Wilson and Accounts amounting to £312 3s 3d were passed for payment. Exception was taken by members of the Council to a charge of £ls Ids by an architect for designing ' laboratory fittings. . The chairman said the expenditure'could not bo avoided under thp circumstances. It was thought also that a charge of £5 for the loan of 200 chairs for two lecturo nights was exorbitant. The chairman promised to ascertain the cost of purchasing 250 chairs, and if accommodation could be found for them. It. was reported that there was _ at present £659 Is od in baud and £oooo on deposit. i A letter from the Professorial Board making suggestions as to the xpnditions which should surround the Grey scholarship was received. It Was decided to refer it on to, the Education' Department; also to support the department’s suggestion that it should ho optional with a pupil who has won the Drey scholarship and the University scholarship which one he will accept. The f Professorial Board reported that 500 books had been accumulated in the College library chiefly through the generosity of British publishers, and suggested that an annual grant for book purchasing should .je mad© by the Council. The request was held over for further consideration, it being pointed out that there was at present no suitable place in which books could be kept. The Law-Students’ Association wrote asking tor a grant of £l3l for the pur. chase of Law Reports and Law jour, nals to be placed in the-College library. It was decided to provide throe-fourths of \tlie,amount if the Law Society donate the remainder, but not to accept certain stipulations proposed by the applicants. The Registrar was empowered .to deal with an application from the Law Students’ Association for the fortnightly use of a room in the Girls’ High School. The lecturer on geology was granted an additional sum of £2O for equipments. .
