EVENING ENTERTAINMENTS

“THE GRAND DUKE.”

It is hardly necessary to remind the public that the first performance of Messrs Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera “The Grand Duke” this side of the 'line will bo given at the Opera House to-uight oy the Wellington Amateur Operatic Society, whose efforts have always been so well received in the past. The opera will ho produced under the conductorsliip- of Mr Manghan Barnett and the stage management of Mr Alf. Levi. The elaborate wigs and “make up” which were in evidence at last night’s dress rehearsal are said .to be a credit, to the society’s perruquier, Mr Frank Wise. His Excellency the Governor and party have signified their intention of witnessing the production of the opera, oh Friday evening. “‘The Grand Duke” will be produced for a season of seven nights.

The performance given by Fuller's Waxworks-Yaudeyjlle Company j last evening at the Choral Hall was; well attended, and the various items; were as , amusing , and interesting as | ever. The minstrel part of the programme is becoming decidedly popular, and 'there is. every indication of a long .continuance of this feature of the show, j The programme of last night will be repeated to-night'. . 1 A “social” in aid of the instrument fund of the Newtown Brass Band will- 1 he held in the Victoria, Hall, Adelaide road, this' evening. The announcement of the. appearance among the performers of the holder ot the Royal' Academy of Music’s gold medal is one reason for; the interest which is being taken in the concert to be given by pupils of St. Mary’s tori, vent at the Art Gallery this evening. An artistic rendering may be expected of works such as Haydn’s “On Mighty Pens” and Grieg's “Solvejg’s Song.” Amongst various other items on the programme, pleasure should be derived from the rendering of the recitative and air, “From Mighty Kings” (Handel), which is deservedly popular among musicians, and songs like Mayer-Hel-mund’s “Amid the Flowers,” Chaminade’s “Stay,” and Hill’s “The World has Grown so Gray.”
