Tlie tbiock ■ situ : ate consists of wooden buildings, and had the flames got a fair start, a serious conflagration would have resulted and much valuable stock would have been destroyed.' This morning; the ineUibers of the legal profession I met to bid farewell to Mr 11. W. Nortbcroft, ■ who • has for some time past!been carrying out the duties of S.-M. for the Wairarapa.- Mr \V. ’G. Beard was spokesman'; -.and m addressing Air Nortbcroft referred to the respect and admiration he had gained by Ids able, and honest administration of the -Jaw,.--and > the manner in which he. had discharged, his duties. Whilst regretting.lid's .removal from the district, they, were glad that he was going to the district in which Ids home lay. Mr G. S. W. Balrymple, on behalf of the Justices of the Peace, baide his Worship farewell, after which Mr Nortbcroft returned thanks.
Mr W. Dalgleisli, a well-known cli over, was last night presented by a lew friends with a silver-mounted pipe, a silver-mounted cigar-holder and a set of gold sleeyelinks. Mr Dalgleisli is leaving for the Clutlia district, and intends proceeding to South Africa, where lie' proposes to settle. "
