THE FIFTH CONTINGENT.

Private letters received from Beira state that Messrs W. Parsons and HayMcKenzic, who went with, the reserves accompanying, the fifth contingent, have been promoted to the position of sergeants in that contingent. During Ore voyage of-the s.s. Wajraata with tho fifth contingent to Beira a Concert was.-held on board, and the original programme, it is stated in a private letter, was sold at auction, the proceeds to go to the funds of the Wellington Hospital. Tho piano presented by Mr and Mrs Brough was bought by the captain of the Waimate. At Beira a boat-race was held between crews from. the Waimate and tho Maori, tho latter winning by two lengths. The “Beira Post’ 1 of May 3rd record., that Lieutenant-Colonel Ncwail, i_in charge of the New Zealanders, and Major Francis were entertained’ ; at dinner by tho Governor and Mrs -Meyrcllcs. 1 Tile same paper says:—"The s.s./Maori, arrived during tjio week with another, contingent of New Zealanders 1 under. Lieut.-Colonel Stuart Ncwail. General Carrington is destined to have a very fino force under him if tiro rest of Ins division keep up to sample. -New Zealand is helping South Airicn with a very liberal hand just now, and has the largest force in tho field, in proportion to population, of any colony oversea from the seat of war.”
